Resolved CFD-DEM Simulation of Free Settling of Polyhedral Particles with Various Orientations: Insights Provided by Oscillation Behavior in Quiescent Liquid

Particle settling is the process by which particulates move toward bottom of a liquid, can affect sediment transport and energy balance marine systems. However, deficiency in understanding resolved fluid–particle interactions with complex boundaries awaits resolution. This study employs hybrid approach that combines computational fluid dynamics (CFD) discrete element method (DEM) to fully simulate free-settling behavior polyhedral particles water. The accuracy verified comparing numerical results experimental data ellipsoidal particle settling. Two series tests horizontal vertical release directions are established investigate effects shape features, such as aspect ratio (AR) corner (C), on particles’ mechanical hydrodynamic characteristics. demonstrate exerts substantial influence resistance, rotational motion, disturbance throughout process. maximum velocities vertically released cases roughly 1.2–1.3 times greater than those horizontally cases. highlights potency CFD-DEM robust technique for comprehending phenomena within geotechnical engineering, including sedimentation erosion seabed sediments.
